Week #13 April 5-11

  1. This week I learned the chemical equation for photosynthesis. I also learned about the autotroph that is a organism that takes the sun's energy and uses it to produce it's own carbohydrates. I understand what photosynthesis is and what the process requires, but I'm not quite sure on the energy transformation that takes place.

  2. In class this week, we learned about the process of photosynthesis. We also learned what ecosystems and autotrophs are. We also learned the chemical equation for photosynthesis and the products produced, which are glucose and oxygen. Energy flow and the biomass pyramid are other things we learned. I, along with Jamie, understand the process of photosynthesis, but I am not sure about the energy transformations that take place.

  5. This week we learned a lot about the food chain and ecosystems in the environment. We learned the chemical equation for photosynthesis and we learned what autotrophs are. We also talked about how each factor in an ecosystem plays an important role and that if they were to die then it would effect the ecosystems in an awful way. Also, we learned that carbon is very essential to living things.

  8. This week in class we learned about autotrophs, ecosystems, the process of photosynthesis, and the food chain. We also watched a movie about how all the concepts we have studied go together. In lab we put different sources of air into ballons to see how much carbon they contained by the color they changed the water with btb they were released into.

  9. This week we reviewed the laws of conservation of energy, matter, or mass; that says energy, matter, or mass cannot be created or destroyed. Energy is what drives matter to move through the different compounds of the ecosystems. Carbon and other elements are what cycles within ecosystems that are being used again and again as they travel through food chains, the atmosphere, soil, and water. Producers and consumers cycle nutrients within the ecosystem and provide the mechanism for energy to flow through the ecosystems.

  10. This week we continued to study the biosphere. We reviewed the laws of conservation of matter and energy. We also learned how important carbon is to an ecosystem. In lab we used balloon to see how much carbon was in different sources of carbon.

  11. This week we learned about the carbon cycle. Carbon sinks and then is released by Combustion, Respiration, Cement manufacture, and Agriculture. We also talked about equilibrium. Today in class we watched a video about earth and how all “spheres” relate to the biosphere.

  12. This week in class we learned about how photosynthesis interacts with the biosphere. We also learned about the carbon cycle. The movie we watched on Friday explained that the carbon cycle is self sustaining. It says that everything has equilibrium, which means balance. If everything was just natural everything woulfd be balanced and we would have the problem of global warming. In lab we focused on carbon and how much carbon is such a big part of life as we know it.

  13. This week in class we learned about the food chain. Autotrophs are the start of the food chain and are also known as producers. They provide the energy needed by consumers or hetertrophs (organisms that obtain their energy from other organisms). The trophic levels are the producers which are plants, some bacteria, and some algae. Then there are the primary consumers (herbivores) like squirrels and rabbits. The secondary consumers (omnivores) like the foxes eat the primary consumers. The tertiary consumers are mainly humans and we eat everything.

  14. This week in class we have learned about the biosphere. I have learned that anything that lives on planet earth is carbon based. Even humans are carbon based. I have also learned about the food chain, because we aren't producers, to the most energy possible we should eat primary consumers. If we eat other things we won't get as much energy as possible. Every time something eats some thing the joules go down by 10% therefore if we eat the primary consumers we get most 500J instead of 50J. I also learned that we are not just herbivores and carnivores we are in fact omnivores.

We also learned about how much energy is transfered through the levels and how much mass gets consumed at each level. We learned about producers and consumers and decompsers. We learned about primary consumers secondary consumers and tertairy consumers.

  16. Last Friday in science class we watched a movie that explained how volcanoes have the capability to form "new land". When volcanoes erupt they produce extraordinary amounts of lava which hardens into new rock after being cooled. Over time this rock builds which then can form new islands and or make islands larger. Volcanoes also have much in common with the topics we learned about at the beginning of the year, including the geosphere and hydrosphere.

  17. This week we reviewed how the food chain works and how energy is lost as the trophic level increases. We learned about producers, decomposers, and consumers, and what part they each play in the food chain. On Friday we watched a video that explained how every sphere is connected to the other. In the movie we also learned about the Carbon Cycle, or how carbon is released and used and released and used again.

  18. This week we continued to learn about the biosphere. This week we also learned about the food chain and how it works and how it looses 10% of energy as the level increases. In lab we reviewed the law of conservation of matter and we took samples of air, breath and chemical reaction to see how they react with water.

  19. This week in lab i was only in class monday and friday but on these two days i learned about the food chains and how if one animal is missing it all gets messed up. Also we watched a video and i learned that the internal heating of the earth keeps us alive. Without volcanos than our whole world would have always been covered in ice.

This week we went re-went over all the information that the substitute went over last week, it was more of a class of review and getting back into the system, On monday we went over the biomass pyramid again and reviewed about all the consumers/producers. Mr. Boyce also reminded up about how ever animal that eat another will only get 10% of what already existed in the animal. Wed. we just reviewed some more and tried to cover more about the cycles in the biosphere, but we didn't get too far into it. Friday we watched a movie about volcanos. The movie talked about how the earth started and then most living "things" came from the process at which volcanos supplied. And it also just gave some really cool facts about volcanos. During lab, we performed a procedure that determined whether various tests would make the water change. And which we would then have to count the drops to make the water blue again. During this lab, our group took a few times before getting it corrected.

In lab we reviewed the law of conservation. The lab helped me understand a lot. On Friday we watched a movie. It showed how new land is made and how important volcanoes are to the earth.

  23. This week we talked about photosynthesis and the food chain. We learned that plants take in carbon and release oxygen. With the food chain we talked about all the types of consumers and decomposers. The lower you eat on the food chain the more efficent you will be. That is why primary consumers are the most efficient. On the last day of the week we watched the Earth Biography. It added on to what we've learned about volcanoes.

  24. This week in science I learned about Photosynthesis and how plants take in carbondioxide and turn it into oxygen. I also leanred about the food chain and how the higher on the food chain you are, the more food you need to eat due to the loss of energy as you go up the food chain. on Friday qwe watched a very interesting video about volcanoes. It had very good information that helped me understand plate techtonics better.

We reviewed to the food chain and the different levels of consumers and producers and decomposers. In lab we also tested different sources to see which ones had more CO2 in them.

  27. This week in science we learned about producers and consumers. Producers, or autotrophs, can make their own food. Consumers, like humans, have to eat either producers or other consumers. As far as energy goes, it is more efficient to be a first level, or primary consumer. A primary consumer eats only autotrophs. It is more efficient because with each energy transfer (when something eats something else) ninety percent of the energy is lost. Only ten percent is retained by the organism. So, if you are a third level, or tertiary consumer, you may have to eat more in volume to recieve the same amount of energy as a primary consumer. In lab, we studied the carbon dioxide by finding out which source of CO2 had the most. The sources were exhaust, human breath, air and a chemical reaction. The chemical reaction, simulating a volcano, released the most CO2.

  30. This week we learned about the food chain and all the places that human stands. We can be just about everything except for producers because we are omnivores. We also studied the carbon cycle. and even though our lab didn't go so well I learned that carbon is in just about everything. including breath, exhaust vinegar/baking soda and i don't remember the last one for the bike pump but its in a lot of things. We also learned about how all the spheres are connected to each other through the biosphere.

  36. THis week, I learned about the food chain and had a refresher on carbon. Even tiny changes in the food chain cause disruption because organisms depend on all the other organisms. Also, in lab, we added substances to water to see which one made the most CO2. It was basically a review from the unit on carbon we had previously this year.

  39. This week I learned about autotrophes and how they make their own food through photosynthesis. We also learned about the food chain and how humans are the highest on it. The bigger you are, the more you have to eat or else the energy transfers won't be as efficient as needed to sustain life. In lab, we tested different sources of CO2 and how they effect water by how much actual carbon is being transferred. When the water turned yellow, that carbon was more ascidic and had more efficient carbon, when stayed the dame or turned blue, it was more of a base type of carbon.

  40. This week in class we watched a movie about volcanoes and how the heat from the Earth's core is causing the plates to move and some of the hot spots are getting hotter. We also learned about the enrgy transfers of the food chain. The higher on the food chain you eat the less efficient you are. When you eat low on the food chain you get more energy. Many of the low organisms on the lower part of the food chain are autotrophes. Autotrophes are organisms that make their own food using photosynthasis. In lab we tested to see if we could take CO2 out of a liquid and then re-introduce it after a few minutes. For all three of our experements we were able to sucessfuly able to take out the Carbon Dioxide and then re-introduce it with the air in the baloons.

We also learned how plants make their own food through photosynthesis. We learned the chemical equation for photosynthesis and how to balance the equation.   42. This week one thing that i thought was very interesting was the vlovanoe movie. I thought that the information in the video was raeally easy to follow, and how vlocanoe's are a big developer on almost all parts in the earth. And how they can create moutains and cause earthquakes in seconds after moving inch by inch every couple of earth. And also how there is a volcanoe right unde rthe hot srping in iceland.

    autotrophs are organisms that make their own food, and all other organisms, that eat autotrophs, are heterotrophs.

    We also learned about the food chain. Energy effeciency goes down as you go up the pyramid. There are producers, or autotrophs, that use photosynthesis and the suns energy to make food. There are primary consumers, or small animals like birds and squirrels amd their diet consists of nuts and grass. There are secondary consumers, like snakes, and foxes who eat the primary consumers. And there are tertiary consumers like us, and lions who eat in all the trophic levels.

  48. I learned this week about photosynthsis and the equasion of how light and carbondioxide are turned into glucose and oxygen.

    We also learned about the food chain. The energy passed on to the next animal up on the food chain is only 10%. The amount of the orgnal food that is passed on is only 10% of the orgnal ammount. The producers are plants, that photosynthisize to make thier own food. Primary consumers eat the plants, secondary consumers eat the primary consumers. Humans are omnivores, and eat both the producers, primary consumers and secondary consumers. We occupy the tertiary level of the food chain and all the other levels.

  57. This week in class, we continued learning about the food chain, biomass pyramid, photosynthesis, autotrophs and carbon and we reviewed the information that we covered last week. Autotrophs can produce their own food by using energy from the sun and don't have to eat another living organism, so they are at they are at the bottom of the food chain. There are primary, secondary, and tertiary consumers and everything after the third consumer is still considered tertiary. People are considered omnivores but we learned that it would be more efficient if more people were vegetarians because the farther that you go up in the food chain, the more the efficiency decreases. If a living organism was removed from the food chain it would mess up everything, because the animal that eats it wouldn't have anything to eat and the thing that the organism was supposed to eat might overpopulate. We also started learning about carbon, and in lab we did an experiment about carbon dioxide levels and seeing the amounts of it in different sources.

In lab we learned about the acidity of CO2 and how much is within exhaust, animal breath, the air, and a chemical reaction simulating a volcano.

This week I learned about the food pyramid and that you are at a disadvantage if you are a carnivor because as a carnivor you only get 10 percent of the animals food and water which makes it less efficiant. I also learned that einstein said if we all wanted to survive we would have to become vegetarian because it is more efficaint and we will get more energy from eating plants and fruits because they make more energy by making their own food.

The terciary consumer is the most dominant on the food chain. As you go up one level on the food pyramid, 10% of the energy is lost.

  81. This week we worked with connecting the spheres, the food pyramid, and the role plants play on the enviorment. In the food pyramid we talked about how only 10% of the previous animal gets transfered up the food chain so primary eaters get the most energy out of their food. The plants cycle different nutrients like carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen through the enviorments. I understood everything.
