Week #3 January 18-24

  1. This week I learned about the way an aquifer works and why they are important. They are important because they are full of useful water. I also learned that the aquifer used for the west is the otowata which is located on the east side of colorado.

  2. This week in science we were doing pages on what type of water there is on earth. To be honest I have no clue why we are learning about that when in lab we learned about aquifers so therefore I am completely lost with that. With the science portion I do know what is going on though.

  3. This past week we learned about aquifers and all of the things associated with them. I learned that aquifers can be replenished by many types of precipitation like rain and snow. We also learned about different types of water: salt and fresh water.

  4. This week we leared about how aquifers work and aquitards. The lab that we did helped me understand what the difference between the two are. I was thinking about the difference and I thought maybe the places with small gravel might be aquitards and places with large gravel would be aquifers.

  5. This week we learned about aquifers, aquitards, and how the water travels to the earth. In lab when we put water in the aquifers I was surprised that my hypothesis was right and I think that the lab really helped me learn how aquifers work with all the levels of them like the zone of aeration, the zone of saturation, and the water table. Also, in lab I learned what an aquitard is and what it looked like with the picture you provided.

  6. This week in scince I learnd about diferent tempasher can be anywere in the world even in cold places. When I found out there are worm steam in the ocean I kind of know about It but not that much. Seeing the point that we did in 1-22-10 I was kind of suprid about the diferent tem. can be any were.

  9. This week I liked the activity on the water temperatures at different places in the world. I never knew that you could actually access so many buoys and get actual readings. I would like to learn more about the currents, and how they affect water temperatures.

  10. This week I learned about aquifers and how important they are. I really liked the lab because it really helped me understand porosity and how porous rocks are. One vocab word I understood really well was evaporation. I aslo learned about the ocean currents and the temperatures associated with them.

  11. This week we I learned about aquifers and how they hold water depending on there size and what kind of rock it is. I also learned about the water cycle and how water travels on earth. I also learned how much of the water on Earth is the ocean and that we don't really have that much fresh water compared to how much of the earth is made of the ocean.

  16. This week we did a work sheet on Energy and the Hydrosphere. There were 8 vocabulary words that you had to define. Then you had to calculate the % of all water forms on earth (ex. Oceans, Ice caps, and Soil moisture). Then on Friday I was gone but were had a work sheet; you had to find the buoy. I am still confused on what a buoy is.

  17. In science class this week, water was the main topic. During class, we learned that the there is much more salt water than fresh water on our planet. Less then 3% of water on earth is fresh! We also discussed warm and cold water currents that exist in the oceans. Warm water currents flow to either pole, while cold water currents flow toward the equator away from either pole.

  18. This week I learned about the different water temperatures around the world. I didn't realize how the Gulf Stream impacts the temperatures of the water, even when the buoys are located the same distance from the equator.

  19. This week I learned that the Gulf Stream is one of the warmest streams because of the uneven heating from the sun. For example, because of the uneven heating, the beaches in Florida are a lot warmer than the beaches in California. I have never really thought of why that was but Know I know.

  25. This week we learned about aquifers and the water on earth. Knowing about aquifers and the other vocab associated with them is an important topic to study because it deals with our source of water, so it is good to know where the water in our sinks come from.

  26. This week I learned about porosity, the water table, the zones of aeration and saturation, and aquifers in general. To be completely honest, the only time I learned about these topics was in lab on Tuesday with Mr. Boyce. Wednesday through Friday I did not learn much at all because Mr. Boyce was not there. I did not do incredibly well on my Moodle quiz because we did not get back our labs, so I had nothing to reference. I also learned a little bit about currents and the amounts of different types of water on Earth, but not that much.

We also did a worksheet on buoys. I still don’t understand how two buoys, that are an equal distance from the equator can have such different temperatures. Is it because of currents?

  36. In this weeks classes we learned about aquifers, porostiy, and the water on Earth. I missed the lab this week, but still understand most of the concepts. Throughout this week I realized that we really don't have as much fresh water as we think, compared to the salt water on Earth.

  37. This week in lab we learned about aquifers. I learned that if the aquifer has smaller rocks in it that it will not be able to hold the same amount of water as if they were big rocks. Small rocks cant hold as much water because they are more compacted together whiich leaves less room for the water to sit, and with big rocks they are less compacted together which means that water can sit in between the rocks where there is just empty space.

  38. In class this week we learned about the movement of water through the water cycle. We mainly focused on groundwater and aquifers. An aquifer is a region in which rocks and the spaces between rocks, porosity, are available for storing water. The water table is the top level of water in an aquifer. The zone of aeration is from the surface of the Earth to the top of the water table, and the zone of saturation is the area where all of the pore spaces of rock are full of water. A recharge is when water seeps down through the soil and refills an aquifer. Aquifers can get recharged by lakes, streams, snowmelt, and rainfall.

  39. This week we learned about water. We learned specifically about groundwater and porosity. Smaller rocks have more porosity because they have less mass so there is more space between them for water. We learned about aquifers. They can be recharged by run-off, lakes, streams, rain, ect.

  40. This past week we learned about how an aquifer works. I learned that an aquifer with small rocks doesn't have as much porosity as an aquifer with large rocks because there is more space. We looked into all vocabulary words which made it easier to understand. I also learned that aquifers can be recharged by rainfall, snowmelt, rivers, and streams.

  45. This week in science class, we mainly learned about how aquifers work. An aquifer is a layer of sediment or rock that contains pores that have the capability of holding water. The amount of water that the layer can contain in the pores of the rock determines it's porosity. This is measured in a percent. We further learned about this concept in lab while testing which aquifer had the greater porosity, the one with the larger rocks or the one with the smaller rocks. We found that the one with the larger rocks had the greater percentage, because it had bigger rocks that didn't go together as well and therefore bigger pores in between. We also learned about fresh water versus salt water and how much there is of each.

This week was kinda a hard week for me to stay focused patcially with the fact Mr. Boyce was not here but in lab I learned how interesting you may think the larger rocks in the aquafirs would carry a larger percent of water but the smaller rocks did which really intersted me because my hypothesis was surely incorrect, haha

  53. This week I have learned about the Aquifer and how it is so important to our daily life. The aquifer holds water that is under ground. it is the water theat many of our wells use up. Without the aquifer many of our wells would not excised today. I have also learned that the bigger rocks are able to hold more water then the little rocks inside of a aquifer. It was interesting to learn about how all of our wells get there water and how important an aquifer can be to our daily life.

An aquifer's zone of saturation is where all the water is held and its zone of aeration is where there empty space for water to be held. The less dense the aquifer, the greater the porosity.

  60. In science this week we learned about aquifers, the water cycle, and the convection currents in the hydrosphere. The aquifers are underground spaces that have a certain amount of porosity. Porosity is the amount of space in an aquifer that can potentially hold water. The water in the aquifers come from precipitation such as rain hail sleet or snow that penetrates through the ground into the available space in the aquifer. The top level of water in the aquifer is called the water table. In lab we learned that the larger the rocks in the aquifer are the higher the porosity is. I didn't realize that an aquifer could be so big and take up space in over three states. I also thought it was interesting to learn where we get our water and some of the reasons it can potentially become polluted.

Along with these interesting facts, I now know various vocabulary words. Such as, percolation, which is precipitation that soaks into the soil. I also never knew that groundwater could help support streams and lakes.

  65. This week in science we learned about aquifers and how to measure the porosity of an aquifer. In lab we measured porosity and compared an aquifer with large rocks to an aquifer with small rocks. The aquifer with large rocks had more space for water because the rocks were not as tightly packed together and that meant that this aquifer had a greater porosity.

  73. In this weeks lab we found the porosity of two aquifers. One with large rock and the other with small gravel. The large rock aquifer had a higher porosity because there was more space for the water. I also learned all the areas in an aquifer such as; the zone of saturation, zone of aeration, and the water table, as well as the properties such as porosity.

The various water currents on our earth caught my attension because they "carry" hot and cool water around the earth in an ever-continuing cycle. I also found it interesting that scientists keep track of what the water temperatres are around the world. This contributes for the prevention of global warming.

We also learned about water tables (the top of the water), zone of aeration(the empty space), zone saturation(the area with the water) and other things associated with aquifers. It was pretty interesting to learn how and where aquifers are located and used.

  78. In class this week we learned about the sources of our water. Then we did a lab on water polution and learned a new word. The word is plume and it means the size and shape of a contaminated aquifer. We also looked at the pollutions in our water system and learned that we can never get rid of a pesticide that is in our water(and other places) we can only dillude it.

An aquifer is an area under the ground where water infiltrates it and is stored in the rocks. We learned that the porosity of an aquifer is related to the size of the rocks in the aquifer. The bigger the rocks in it the more water it can hold. Also we learned how they can be reacharged. The main one though is when precipitation melts and seeps through the surface.
