Week #6 February 8-14

Will Durant said that "civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice." how does the recent earthquake in Haiti illustrate that comment?

  1. The recent earthquake in Haiti demonstrates this quote perfectly. It shows with everything else going on in Haiti, the earthquake is the one thing that we have no control over. The political issues is a result of human error but the earthquake no one could stop or control how strong it was.

  2. This Quote is great for the earthquake in Haiti because it shows that we can do everything we can but we will never be able to stop one. It also tells us that we are not the almighty and that we cant just say i want there to be an earthquake in Europe and then there be one.
We are striving to be able to predicted when one might occur but that seems to be the greatest challenge of our time.

  3. The earthquake in Haiti was caused by geological consent. As the quote says civilizations exist only if the world will let them. The Haiti earthquake was an uncontrollable incident that no human could stop, it just happened. So this quote illustrates the dominance the world has on human population.

  4. The earthquake in Haiti perfectly demonstrates the use of this quote. It was civilization... that was destroyed by geological consent. Our inexperience in this geological topic has proved to be fatal on multiple occasions. Although we are trying to find ways to predict earthquakes, we have not found a successful method of predicting the time and place of earthquakes because the earths crust is always moving. Thus we come to the second part of our quote, "subject to change without notice." The second part of the quote means that because the earths crust is constantly moving, geological features and earthquakes appear almost randomly and we cannot tell the times and places they are going to occur. This goes to show that nature can overpower humans and we are not fully in control of our own planet.

  6. The quote by Durant is kinda hard to comprehend the first time, but it is basically saying that us humans have no control over what happens in the world and what it has to throw at us. The recent earthquake in Haiti is a perfect example because the earthquake hit and we were able to do absolutely nothing about it, earth takes it's own course and we can't control it.

  7. The earthquake in Haiti is a perfect demonstration of this quote. We aren’t the controllers of the Earth. We can’t prevent or predict where earthquakes are going to happen. We can not tell the earth where to have an earthquake here and when it’s going to happen. It is up to the geological consent. The only thing we can control is how much aid we can give to those who suffered from the earthquakes, and what we can do to prepare for them.

  8. Well look at haiti there have been a lot of deaths. The civilization has gone way down from deaths, missing people, and just adoptions. Im not sure if it will ever be the same agian. The whole world can be struck by a natrul disaster. And haiti is a example of that.

  9. The quote from Will Durant perfectly describes what happened in Haiti. Haiti was struck by Mother Earth without any warning, sending an entire country in shock and further digging a hole for the people of Haiti to dig themselves out of. This proves to us that we don't control our planet, rather our planet controls us. This is the point that Will Durant is trying to make in his quote.

  10. This quote is basically saying that Mother Nature will take it course without warning and this just occurred a couple of weeks ago in Haiti. It is the perfect example because the earthquake hit with no warning and we cannot control it. This is what Durant is stating in his quote.

  11. The quote "Civilization exists by geological consent subject to change without notice," Will Durant. Haiti is a perfect eample of this. Because the earth changed without notice, and we lost alot of lives. But it is something we can not control.

    ReplyDelete
  12. When Durant says "civilization exists by geological consent," hes saying civilization exists due to the geological features of the earth. "Subject to change without notice," is very true. Earthquakes happen unexpectedly.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The quote from Will Durant describes what happened in Haiti because it basically shows that us humans have no control over earth and basically we can't do anything about it.

  14. The Earthquake in Haiti illustrates this quote close to perfectly. One way that this is illustrated is that the Earthquake in Haiti just happened. The people in Haiti most likely knew that an Earthquake was coming, however they had no idea when. Earthquakes happen without warning.

  15. The qoute "civilization exists by geologiclal consent, subject to change without notice" connects to the recent earthquake in Haiti exactly. We as humans honestly have no control over what happens as a result of nature. In Haiti no one was aware early on of what happened, and they were blind sided, which is unfortunate because many lives were lost and we were ultimately helpless.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The earthquake in Haiti shows that we as humans can’t control everything. Sooner or later bad earthquakes and weather will happen and we will not be able to stop it. As humans we won’t be able to predict every earthquake or control any of them.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This quote shows what happened in Hati perfectly. We have no cotrol over what happens with nature. If we had control over nature you can bet that we would have not let there be an earthquake in Hati. We can try to predict when mother nature will strike but in we will never be able to completly predict exactly when it will happen.

  18. This quote is perfect in describing the Haiti earthquake. This civilization wa destroyed by a build up of pressure which no one knew about beside the earth itself. Geological occurences like this are nearly impossible to predict whisch is what makes them so disaterous. We have no way of knowing when the next one will come therefore the civilizations of today are only able to exist if the Earth allows it to in a matter of speaking.

    ReplyDelete
  19. This quote explains that the earth decides where people live. People like to live in safe places, to raise a family and have a nice home. The earth never stands still , it is in constant motion. People have suffered with the lifelong ability about predicting the future.Everyone wants to know when disaster will strike. This quote really illiterates the earthquake in Haiti because we don’t focus on the inconsistent earth until something bad happens.

    ReplyDelete
  20. It illistrates what happened in Haiti because they thought they had atleast th ground underneith their feet but they regretibly didnt. Most people think the ground undernieth their feet is one of the few garentes in life what they dont understand is that it is a constantly shifting and changing land scape. It does not have feelings or emotions it simply acts the way nature intended for it to act and because of this it is never garented that it will always be there or be stable. When nature strikes it will strike no matter what we can do very little except account for the strike and change accordingly. The same is with earth quakes, they are unpredictable and have a devastating force. When Durant said this quote i believe that is what he meant to say. We are not garented the land we live on we can simply live here while we have the chance and try to adjust for nature when we can.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It illustrates the recent earthquake in Haiti because it showed that we are not in control and mother nature can destroy us very easily. Nature is so unpredictable. It is always changing and we never know what to expect. It goes by however it wants and without warning.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The quake in Haiti demonstrates Durant's quote because the earth allows us to live here. When the caststrophies like Haiti happen you realize that the earth can take life away just as easily as it gives us life. With the earths permission we live on earth.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The quote demonstrates exactly what happened in Haiti. The earth changes constantly and surprises the people with its natural courses. No one knew that the earthquake in Haiti was going to happen but because of the earth changing so much natural disasters are bound to happen. We need to adjust for the earth to cause less of those.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Earth is very complicated with the natural changes that is has and for such a tiny planet we havent ajusted enough to overr come big disasters. The earth is always changing and thats why the people in Haiti werent expexcting it. And earth alows us to live on it with all the thnigs that it does

  25. (THE week of this) This week we learned about sizemic activitease such as earthquakes. Earthquakes are made by the Earths crust moveing and coliding with eachother. I also learned that the core is most likely iron.

  26. "Civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice." -Will Durant

This quote demonstrates the earthquakes and any other geological disasters (hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.) strike without warning. The people of Haiti were not given a warning, or even a chance, to evacuate. They didn't get any sort of say in if the earthquake happened or not. This demonstrates the we, as powerful as we think we are in the US, cannot control geography. The earth does not listen to us or our commands, but rather does what it pleases.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The earthquake in Haiti is a good example of the quote because we rely on the earth not changing on us. Then there can be a sudden change without a warning like the Haiti earthquake. No one was able to prepare for a natural disaster such as this. Earthquakes don"t give any warning.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well the quote kinda says that when a earthquake hits when dont know when its coming and we really can't do anything about it. Haiti is a good example of the quote because people didn't know when it was coming so they couldn't prepare themselves. The earth just does whatever so we just can't control what it does.

    ReplyDelete
  29. We don't rule the earth, our world rules us. We can't control if it kills us. What happened in Haiti could not have been stopped. Our scientists don't have advanced enough equipment to tell where or when an Earthquake is going to occur. I hope that someday we will be able to tell exactly where an earthquake is going to hit and be able to evacuate everyone so something that happened in Haiti, never happens again.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Will Durant's quote “civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice" shows that the world does not write when and where earthquakes are going to happen. The Earth and its habits cannot be changed under normal circumstances. Each person can be hit by any type of natural literally anywhere in the world, whether it be an earthquake in San Francisco or a hurricane in Florida each person is subject to severe natural disasters everywhere in the world and humans cannot do anything about it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The quote said by Will Durant explains that the people of this world are ready for any sort of change not that we want it. This ties to the earthquake in Haiti because when these things happen the people have to deal with the problems this planet throws at us. I am positive that the citizens of this earth will eventually have to deal with a geographical shift that the Earth does.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The earthquake that happened in Haiti is a good example of the quote, "civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice." We couldn't stop the earthquake from happening or evacuate the people in Haiti because there is no way for us to predict what the Earth will do; when and where things will happen. A lot of innocent people die without notice, from what the Earth controls.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Haiti had no idea what was going to hit them and niether did the rest of the world. If we are going to live on a unstable planet we have to be prepared for anything to hit us. Haiti was not prepared for any sort of natural disaster and they suffered the consequences of it. It could have happened on any plate at any time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The quote, "Civilation exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice," is a perfect example of what happened in Haiti. This quote is showing that we are not more powerful than Earth, and can't control what happens when are where.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The quote by Will Durant is a very good example of what is happening in the world today. If Haiti could have seen what was going to happen they would have tried to evacuate everyone from the country. However, as we have found, human society does not conrtol the Earth and its many changes but just is along for the ride.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The quote makes sence because there is logic to it. I don't think it means that the earth will not alow us to live somewhere but that it means that if people where ment to live there, there then there would not be earthquakes and other disasters. or in other terms because of the disasters that happen in certain places people wont want to live there. Like in Hati hundreds of thousands of people died but the people that survived will not want to live there in fear of that happening again. So i think the quote means that people's choice of living location depends if it is safe or not. An example very little people choose to live somewhere not safe like the sahara desert.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The earthquake in Haiti is a perfect description of Will Durant's quote. Weather is a big factor in running and controlling what goes on in the earth. So when Haiti was struck by that devastating earthquake, no one knew what weather had in store for us that day. It unexpectedly came in and destroyed a nation that already had enough hardships before, being the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

    ReplyDelete
  38. This quote says that humans aren't able to predict everything about Earth and that many things are unpredictable just like the earthquake in Haiti. We knew that there was going to be an earthquake but not exactly where. Many geological disasters can happen and destroy a country or state and we won't even know it's going to happen.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The earthquake in Haiti relates to this quote because although humans think that we are in control, that is a false sense of security because in the end, geology has the final say. Also the part of "subject to change without notice," describes earthquakes, like the one in Haiti, because there is no possible way to predict earthquakes as of now.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Humanity believes that we have complete dominion and right to reign over the earth. this is not true, and has been proven as such many times. we have no control over the inner workings of the earth, and the best we can do is evacuate, recover, and prepare for the next time.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The recent earthquake, Haiti proves that this quote is correct because using the seismograph they new that an earthquake was coming and we have equipment to know whats happening underneath the earth although humans never know exactly when or where an earthquake will hit, which explains the fact that no one knew that the Haiti earthquake was going to happen. We dont have that type of technology yet.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The world can take effect without any one noticing. An example of this is the earth quake in Haiti. No one saw the earth quake coming it was just earths way of balancing things out. no one saw this coming because we don't have this type of technology yet.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The quote relates to Haiti because like everyone has said Mother Nature can hit us unexpectedly. Which is exactly what happend to Haiti so the quote does relate to the situation of everything that has happend.

    ReplyDelete
  44. This quote demonstrates the recent Haiti earthquake perfectly. We can contoll many other things in Haiti but one thing we could not control is a earthquake. We couldn't try to predict when an earthquake is going to happen because we cannot control mother nature.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The quote "civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice." by Will Durant shows that we need to be ready for any natural disaster because the Earth that we live on is an unpredictable place.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think the quote means that the world is the most unpredictable thing we know of. and it's always changing weather we like it or not. I don't think many people knew that the earthquake in Haiti was coming, but it hit. and few people saw it coming. many natural disasters are unpredictable. so our predictions on earthquakes need to be spot on, or who knows, maybe another earth quake is just around the corner...

    ReplyDelete
  47. The earthquake in Haiti is a good demonstration of the quote because it shows that we cant tell when an earth quake will happen because it unpredictable.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The earthquake in Haiti demonstrates this quote perfectly. It says the earth will destroy your country if you don’t take care of it, just like Haiti in poverty. The earth just gave them a warning to fix their country.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The earthquake proves this because it means that the randomness determines when there will be another disaster and an extremely large disaster could destroy everything. Just like the earthquake in haiti.

    ReplyDelete
  50. The quote that Will Durant says explains that the earth does what it wants to do, not we want it to do. It also doesn't give any warnings as to what is going to happen. What happened in Haiti is a perfect example of that. The people in Haiti had no warning that an earthquake was going to occur and I'm sure that they didn't command the earth to have an earthquake and it listened, it just happened without anyone knowing that it would happen.

    ReplyDelete
  51. "Civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice." This quote took me a little to understand. But I think it means that we are all here on the earth, only because it allows us to. The earth can change at any moment without our say or not. Just like the earthquake in Haiti, or hurricane Katrina, tsunamis, or any other natural disaster. We never know when something like that is going to happen, we can try and predict when we think its going to happen, but never actually know for sure. The earth will keep changing and changing, with our without human consent.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The quote "civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice", relates to the recent earthquake in Haiti in several ways. This quote means that no one knows when a earthquake will occur. the earth is its own brain and does what ever it wants when it wants. this relates to Haiti because no one knew that Hatia was going to occur.

    ReplyDelete
  53. "Civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice." This quote by Will Durant connects to the recent earthquake in Haiti. It illustrates that although we may think that we run the universe because we are a human civilization and we get caught up in the money and the power in the world, so we think we own and can control everything. But in reality the formation of the Earth(geological consent) controls us. It decides when it is going to flood New Orleans or when its going to create a massive earthquake in Haiti. It does things without us knowing when, or even the size of it. Our whole life could be altered because of a sudden hurricane or an earthquake. This shows that the geological consent controls us, not the other way around.

    ReplyDelete
  54. the quote is a little confusing but , i think it means know one will know exactly when an earthquake will strike but the earth will continue to have earthquakes and other natural disasters when it wants to and we can't control that.

    ReplyDelete
  55. i think this quote means that, the people have to put up with the enviorment. and since it is changing constantly. and that if we dont take notice to it and adapt to the new enviorment. then it can really go against us. so yes we do take notice the the changing enviorment all the time because we need to in order to survive

    ReplyDelete
  56. The earthquake in Haiti proves this quote 100%. Humans do not control the Earth, it changes constantly and we have to adapt to its changes. We are on Earth because it is one of the only places with living conditions that fit humans needs, but it is changing and we can't to anything about it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. "Civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice." This quote by Will Durant connects to the recent earthquake in Haiti. Humanity is but a single element that exist among the many other elements only to live upon the surface of the of the planet as if it were just flowing in the wind. We exist only as long as our planet alows us to. There could be a sudden quake that ends our existance entirly and there is nothing we could do to stop it. Quakes build up over meny hundreds of years. There is no way it is possible to tell when the next quake may hit dew to the many years that build up befor. All we can do is just rebuild our monuments to our race and prepair for the next quake and hope it isn't our last ner death exspirince.

    ReplyDelete
  58. This qoute is 100% correct, the earth is moving and changing at its own rate, we do not control it. we are just the inhabitans living on it.If the world were to have a hge earthquake tommorow we could not stop it or predict it, its just how the world works.

    ReplyDelete
  59. This quote explains the earthquake in Haiti very well. It shows how humans don't control the Earth and that we exsist only if Earth allows. All we can do is predict that these things will happen and prepare acordingly. We just have to live our lives and hope for the best.

    ReplyDelete
  60. mr. will durants quote was well demonstrated by the earthquake that occured in haiti. the quotes iner meaning was that humans cant control everything that the world throws at us.

    ReplyDelete
  61. i dont really understand the quote but i think that the earthquake in Hati because it kind of brought everyone together to help and it was the one thing going on it Hati that noone could control because nature is uncontrolable.

    ReplyDelete
  62. It means that as we watch the world we don't notice any change and there is no way we can prevent an earthquake from happening or to the regular eye you may not see that the geological changes that are happening right before our eyes. we are too distracted.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Will Durant's quote says that our civilization exists by geological consent and is subject to change without notice. i think that this means that our civilization is dependent on the earth and not the other way around. the earth is going to do what it wants and isnt going to let us no about it. so basically, earth is the boss.

  65. This is parralell to what has just happened in Haiti. The ground on which we stand is always changing. It is unpredictable and that is what bothers people. We all want to know when a disaster will strike or what to expect, but it is just impossible. We all tend to look away from disasters until they strike. It is only when they strike that we care or wish to know when? When will this happen again? But we will never know. Will Durant says, our civilization exists by geological consent and is subject to change without notice.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Durant's quote means that we cannot control the earth, the earth controls us no matter what we think and can change in an instant. We exist on the earth if it wants us to because it could kill all of us without us being able to anything about it. The eartquake in Haiti demonstrates this power perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Our civilization exists by geological consent. The only reason any civilization exists is because people build them. However, any number of natural disasters (draught, flood, earthquake, hurricane) can destroy cities, or even whole civilizations if it were ever severe enough. Earth is a restless planet. The crust that we live on is a tremendously thin layer covering an unstable and unpredictable core. Haiti demonstrates this perfectly. Earth was shuddering, and Haiti happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Any news website will show pictures and video of the devestation that occured, and it showcases Will Durants quote perfectly

    ReplyDelete
  68. Will Durant's quote, "civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice," does demonstrate why there is devastation in Haiti. It means that civilization is forced to adapt to the way that Earth’s environment exists and changes. When it says "subject to change without notice," it means that the Earth is going to change however it wants or needs no matter what and we cannot stop natural disasters. Sometimes we don't notice little changes in the environment and we do notice disastrous geological changes, but they are beyond our control. The people in Haiti were forced to change because the Earthquake was beyond their control.

    ReplyDelete
  69. i learned that the focus is where the earthquake takes place. i also learned that a siesmograph measures the siesmic waves in a earthquake and i think Durant meant that we cant control the earth but the earth controls us and we cant do anything to change that

    ReplyDelete
  70. This quote proves the unpredictability of earthquakes. Ittells us how we do not always know exactly what will happen but we need to know how to react to something when it does happen. If we can do that then we can be ready for anything..

    ReplyDelete
  71. This quote ties into what happened in Haiti because we had no idea that what happened in Haiti was going to happen. Just like in the quote when he says "subject to change without notice." this is a great example in what happened in Haiti when we thought the earthquake was going to happen somewhere else but it changed and ended up a devastating blow to Haiti because of an unexpected earthquake.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Haiti proves the saying because the earthquake happened with no notice. People had lived in that area for a long time. Then the earthquake happened and lives were changed with no warning.

    ReplyDelete
  73. The quote proves that the earthquake in Haiti is not something that ham civilization has control over. An earthquake could happen anywere on the borders of plates, and as disasterois as they are, humans want to control them, but we can't. That's mother nature's job, because even the best geologists haven't gt a clue how to protect the islands on top of plate hotspots. It is a matter of learnig how to dedect trm in time, before something like Haiti happens again.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Will Durant also says that “civilization exists by geologic consent, subject to change without notice.” How does the recent earthquake in Haiti prove this statement to be correct?

The recent earthquake in Haiti proves this statement correct because this earthquake happened without notice. Many people in Haiti perished due to the surprise earthquake that hit just recently. Why were people not evacuated before the earthquake hit? We do not have the knowledge or technology to accurately predict when an earthquake will happen which is why “civilization exists by geologic consent, subject to change without notice.” The earthquake in Haiti is an example of how “civlization by geologive consent can change without notice.” Will humans ever be able to accurately predict when an earthquake wil hit? If so, many lives will be saved.

  75. this quote says that earthquaes dont care where anyone is, they will go off wherever they have too. earthquakes are dangerous and the only way to really avoid them is to not live neer the plate boundries.

The recent earthquake in Haiti illustrates the quote from Will Durant quite well because it pretty much explains that things like plate tectonics aren't in our power. This also is saying the way things look today, with the mountains and volcanos and such are from the plate tectonics.

    ReplyDelete
  77. The eathquake in Haiti proves this qoute because it shows that the earth controlls people. People can't controll what the geological actions of the earth controll people.

    ReplyDelete
  78. The earthquake in Haiti proves Will Durant's quote, "civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice," The recent devastation in Haiti shows that the earth is ever-changing and does not adapt to civilization, rather it forces civilization to adapt to it, The earthquake was unpredictable and forced an entire civilization to rebuild. People can not control the earth, but through natural disasters such as earthquakes the earth has a huge effect on civilization. Earthquakes are not within peoples power and that is what the quote is trying to get across.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Even though this quote relates to the earthquake in Haiti, it also relates to every other natural disaster around the world. This quote is basically saying that humans will either survive or not based upon geological consent. Whatever the earth decides to do is not in any human power. So, dependent on what the earth decides to do, as in earthwuakes, hurricanes, or volcanoes, we really have no control if we will survive.

    ReplyDelete
  80. This is a good example of his quote. Civilization only exists because of geological concent. Hati was distroyed when the earth quake hit. The plate forces people who are ill adapted to theier environment any whay to adjust even more to survive the earthquakes that happen often, just not on that recent scale.

    ReplyDelete
  81. This quote is saying that Mother Nature will take it course without warning and this just occurred a couple of weeks ago in Haiti. It is the perfect example because the earthquake hit with no warning and people build their egos and they get desroyed and we cannot control it. This is what I think Durant is stating in his quote.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Civilizations can only exist on solid, stable ground. Mankind cannot harness the power of the earth; therefore we are subject to its spazy A.D.D. movements. Once the ever-changing crust breaks, our civilizations fall subject to the earth’s force. Destruction is enviable. The earthquake in Haiti has demonstrated the earth’s power. Without notice a whole city is destroyed. Will Durant’s quote correctly illustrates this destruction.

    ReplyDelete
  83. The devestating earthquake in Haiti demonstrates that quote very well. After this earthquake, Haiti has changed dramatically. They no longer have clean water, homes, or the ability to be self reliant. It will take, perhaps years, for them to recover. The earthquake also has taken many lives and has broken many spirits. Civilization no longer really exists in Haiti and it can't without geological consent.

    ReplyDelete
  84. The resent earthquake in Haiti demonstrates the quote," civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice," by Will Durant by showing that an earthquake can occur at any moment. No knows when an earthquake can happen. Haiti was the perfect example for that. Many people died form the earthquake. Civilization in Haiti has gone down the drain proving that civilization doesn't exist without geological consent.

    ReplyDelete
  85. The quote by Will Durant shows that even though we think we are in control of what happens on the earth, we really aren't. Things can happen out of our control, like the earth quake in Haiti. The geology of the area affected the civilization.

    ReplyDelete
  86. The quotes by Durant is basically saying that although try and controll the natural disasters, and prevent them, we cannot, we cannot control the world and what happens in it.

    ReplyDelete
  87. The quote by Durrant shows that the human race beleives we are on top. That we can control everything that happens around us when in reality this is not true. Many natural disasters are much higher up on the food chain than humans. Earthquakes can not be contained or controlled. They have minds of their own and us humans can not do anything about them till they strike. A civilation, like Haiti can not, and did not, survive without stable ground to stand up on. As long as humans have this stable ground they think they are on top. The instant an earthquake strikes we are brought back to reality, back to unstable ground.

    ReplyDelete
  88. “Civilization exists by geological consent, subject to change without notice” (Will Durant). The earthquake in Haiti illustrates this comment because although people think they control the world, the reality is, they do not. The earth is constantly moving and shifting. There is no way of telling what the earth is going to do next, which is why Durant was correct. Nobody expected the earthquake in Haiti because earthquakes are unpredictable. People think they control the world, but the world has a mind of its own.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Haiti proves that quote to be correct because earthquakes can happen anywhere anytime without notice and we would be victims of "geological consent".

    ReplyDelete
  90. The quote by Durrantis about hoe humans think we can control everything but really the earth does. Humans cannot stop anything from happening. Like earthquakes they can happen anytime and we cant do anything about it.

  91. The quote by Will Durant is very interesting. He is saying that basicaly that the earth controls us, we dont control it. The Earth is moving, and the events like in Haiti will happen, and we can niether predict or prevent them. Our lives are controlled by the earth, and we are helpless.

    ReplyDelete
  92. He is saying that we can't control the earth, the earth does what it wants to. And even though the event with Haiti is sad we all have to help and do what we can because we can't predict the future.

  93. It proves this true because when the earthquake hit haiti it destroyed there civilzation. It's also hard to predict when the will happen.

  94. Durant is trying to say humans are not in control of everything. for example, hurricanes and earthquakes can happen at any time and humans cant stop them. humans need to lose their egos

  95. The earthquake in Haiti was caused by geological consent. As the quote says civilizations exist only if the world will let them. The Haiti earthquake was an uncontrollable incident that no human could stop, it just happened. So this quote illustrates the dominance the world has on human population.

  96. every one knows that the earth quake in haiti was so devastating and there are many people asking how devastation like that can be prevented. i was wondering if there is any way to predict an earth quake coming so people can prepare?

  97. The earth quake in haiti shows that the quote is very true. Life on this planet could be taken away with out warning by a natural disaster.

  98. Haiti is a perfect example of Will Durant's quote. It says that Mother Nature basicallly takes over. There wads nothing we could've done to prevent this because it came without a warning. Durant explains this perfectly.

  99. This qoute reprensents the Haiti disaster in the same way if can be connected to every natural disaster along the coasts and other regions. Where ever you go there will always a disaster in one form or another. If you live along a fault line then you risk a high chance of being in an earthquake. Or along the coast you risk a chance of being effected by hurricanes. Your just have to know how to prepare unlike the Haitions.

  100. "civilization exists by geological consent" means to me that people exist cause of the way the earths geological map and that if it didnt then we woludnt be here

  102. The earthquake in Haiti expresses this quote perfectly. Humans have lived their for many years and built a civiliztion there but it was all taken away in a matter of days by the Earth.

  103. This quote shows the futility of humans. We can work and work to create something only to have nature utterly destroy it at a whim in a fraction of the time it took to create.

  104. The quote by Durant is kinda hard to comprehend the first time, but it is basically saying that us humans have no control over what happens in the world and what it has to throw at us. This also means that it is not possible to predict earthquakes

  105. It shows how fragile society is. While we could be living contently one day, our homes could be destroyed the next.
