Week #9 March 1-7

  1. This week, we are moving on to talk about radioactivity and such. So far, we have only discussed how to balance equations with Alpha or Beta particles. It's all making sense to me this far!

This week I lernd that isotope are atoms af the same elemant that contain differnt nunbers of neatons. the way you can tell the number of isotopes is how many neatons there are. you can tell if the isotopes is apart is the way how many neatron there are. some of the way you can tell is that the camial is rest into the air. it is very importain to study of isotopes becouae it will tell us how old a thing is and how bod it is.

  5. This week we learned about isotopes. An isotope is elements of the same type that have different number of neutrons. Ha :D. We learned the symbol notations that express different isotopes of an element and got to practice them on the three worksheets we did in class today. We also learned the three types of radiation, alpha particles, beta parictles, and gamma rays. When an isotope decays it releases these three types of radiation in order to become stable. That's what I learned this week.

  6. This week we learned about isotopes, radioactive decay, and half-lifes. Isotopes are atoms of the same element that contain different numbers of nuetrons. The half-life of a radio active element tells us how long it will take for 1/2 of the element to decay. This is important becuase it provides us with information about the radioactive decay at the core of the earth. In lab, we tossed 128 pennies onto the table and counted how many were heads and tails. Theoretically, the amount for each should be 1/2 of the previous, total number. Also, radioactive materials will never decay completely. There will always be a small portion of radioactive material left.

  7. We learned alot about isotopes. We learned about how to do alpha and beta decay with them and how to figure out the number of protons and neutrons if you are given the element and the isotope number. We did a lab with pennies that demmonstrated the concept of half-life. Unstable (radioactive) elements will decay into an element that is stable.(most likely iron)

  9. In class this week we learned about different types of radioactive decay. Beta, alpha, and gamma particles. We also balanced beta and alpha equations by using the formulas that we were given. Also, in lab we learned about half-lives and isotopes. We experimented with pennies and found out how many half-lives it took for the pennies to decay.

Half-Life is the time required for half of the nuclei in a sample of a specific isotope to undergo radioactive decay.   13. This week we were learning about radioactive decay. I learned that atoms decay to become stable or non-radioactive. To balance an equation it requires you to know protons, how to get the number of neutrons from the isotope number, and how to balance the equation it's self. I am feeling very confident in this matter and am looking forward to the test on Monday. It is amazing how long it takes for a radioactive atom to decay. I don't get exactly what happens but will soon.

  14. This week in class we learned a lot about radiation. We learned what a half life was and how it deals with the radioactive decay in the core of the earth. Also we learned how to balance elemantal equations with both alpha and beta decay. This to also helps us understand what is going on inside the earth and how radiation can be a good thing and a bad thing.

  18. Last year I had learned very little about isotopes, but I never understood what they really were. This week I have a complete understanding of what isotopes are and what it means when they decay. I also am confident on how to balance decaying equations such as beta and alpha particles.Furthermore, I know how to identify different isotopes because of the different masses.

    This week in science we talked about isotopes and radioactive decay reactions. Isotopes are elements of the same type that contain different numbers for neutrons. For example Chromium-58 and Chromium-63 are isotopes, they are the same element but they have a different number of neutrons. Radioactivity is the process where certain isotopes emit particular forms of radiation and the substance that emits the radiation is radioactive. There are three different forms of emitted radiation; alpha, beta, and gamma.

  25. This week in science, we learned about radioactive decay and half-livers. In lab, we demonstrated this by doing an experiment with pennies. This experiment used pennies that were heads-up as non-decayed nuclei and pennies that were tails-up as decayed nuclei. We continued to shake and "roll" the pennies until all of them had decayed. This demonstrated the concept of a half-life. In lecture class, we learned how to balance radioative equations. We learned that there are three types of radiation: alpha and beta particles, and gamma rays. Alpha particles are the weakest, beta are the middle, and gamma rays have the highest penetrating power. To balance radioactive equations, you use either alpha or beta decay. Alpha decay uses helium-4 and Beta decay uses a negative election.

  28. This week in science class we are learning about radioactive decay. The three major forms of emitted radiation include alpha, beta, and gamma particles. We are currently learning how to balance equations that involve alpha and beta particles. We are also studying isotopes which are atoms of the same element with difference numbers of neutrons. Our class was introduced to the half life of radioactive elements. The half life shows how long it takes for half of a radioactive element to decay.

  34. This week we learned about radioactivity, and radioactive decay. I thinks its really cool how once an object decays long enough it begins to become radioactive. And this can be very deadly to the human body, and can mutate your cells, and kill you.

We learned about how to do Alpha and Beta decay (soon gamma) equasions and how to figure out the number of protons and neutrons if you are given the element and the isotope number. We did a lab with pennies that demmonstrated the concept of half-life. Unstable (radioactive) elements will decay into an element that is stable. I think that the new equasions are the easyist.

During this week we talked more about radioactvity, and how the different kinds are the alpha and beta, and how the different effects can happen from these different types, we also were talking about, gamma, i think it was too, maybe im wrong. But during lab we performed the half lifes and how we should be able to predict the half life of anything, but the lab demonstrated how we cant determine the exact half life, I think that lab made me really understand that alot more than i would've.

  50. i thought it was kind of ironic that this whole week pretty much in history and science we talked about radioactivity. in history we are studying the time of the A-bomb and when they tested all the nukes, and how the radioactivity stays for a long time and kills any one who is exposed long enough and will for a very long time. in science we talked about how gamma rays completely destroy your body and they are highly radioactive

  57. This week we learned about radioactivity and because certain isotopes emit certain forms of radiation during radioactivity, we also learned about isotopes. Isotopes are atoms that have different numbers of neutrons but are the same element. We learned how to tell the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an isotope. The different types of radiation that are released from radioactivity are alpha, beta, and gamma. We also did a lot of practice balancing radioactive decay reactions with beta decay and alpha decay. An alpha particle has two protons and two neutrons and a beta particle has just one electron.This meant that we had to learn two different ways to balance them correctly. We also learned about half life during lab, and how you can predict an estimate that will be somewhat close to the actual half life.

We demonstrated half-life in lab when we sorted pennies according which side was face up after we dumped them into a box. Radioactivity is when certain isotopes give off particular forms of radiation. Finally, we learned how to balance equations and why it is important to balance equations. Matter cannot be created or destroyed, which is why decay equations need to be balanced.

Three major forms of emitted radiation are alpha (lowest energy), beta (slightly stronger), and gamma rays (strongest). The earth's core is hot because of radioactive decay.

  67. We learned alot this week. We learned about radioactive decay in the Earth's core and worked on finding the number of protons and neutrons in one nucleus with isotopes. We balenced decaying reactions as well. Some of the basics are that protons have a positive charge while neutrons are neutral and electrons have a negative charge. Particles with oppositely charged ends attract while perticles with similarly charged ends repel. The two sub- atomic perticles that act upon the "strong nuclear force" are protons and neutrons. When a nucleus has too few or too many neutrons it is unstable and it admits radiation. And one last thing I feel is important to know is that the term "geothermal" is defined as heat from within the Earth.
